Ubisoft is not shying away from the NFT space, announcing a fresh collaboration with doublejump.tokyo for their upcoming NFT-based RPG, Champions Tactics: Grimoria Chronicles. This move reinforces Ubisoft’s commitment to its Quartz NFT initiative, first launched in December 2021.
Navigating Partnerships and Blockchain Implementation
Ubisoft’s journey into the NFT realm has been marked by partnerships, notably with Immutable and now doublejump.tokyo. While Champions Tactics is set to operate on the HOME Verse blockchain—managed by doublejump.tokyo and certified by Oasys—it raises questions about the role of Ubisoft’s own Quartz system. Initially intended as a foundational infrastructure, Quartz’s current status might now lean more towards redundancy as Ubisoft taps into the expertise of seasoned Web3 entities.
The gameplay trailer for Champions Tactics, though scant on details, suggests a familiar format akin to many free-to-play card games. However, the integration of NFTs could potentially differentiate it, aligning with Ubisoft’s vision of leveraging blockchain tech to offer “thousands of unique heroes.” Yet, the effectiveness and reception of such NFT implementations remain to be seen, especially considering the lukewarm success of similar ventures by other gaming giants like Square, Bandai Namco, and Sega.
As Ubisoft continues to explore the volatile terrain of NFTs within gaming, the industry watches closely. Will Champions Tactics mark a turning point for NFTs in mainstream gaming, or will it echo the disenchantment seen in past projects? Only time will tell.
